Cool House – 180° views of Phoenix
After nearly two years of renovations, this Vernon Swaback designed home is complete. Rarely does a project like this present itself. It’s one of a kind. Entirely unique.
Vernon Swaback is the last practicing apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. While his other contributions to the Valley (including DC Ranch and Biltmore Estates) are better known, his design here is no less impressive.
After four decades, perched precariously above Phoenix, this home did not have a single damaged brick. No hairline cracks in the foundation, even without post tension slabs. The roof alone is expected to last another 50 years.
Practically speaking, all homes are simply four walls and a roof. They vary in size, build quality and location. Some come with a view. This one requires a vision.
From the front, you can see State Farm Stadium, Downtown, Midtown, Sky Harbor, Papago and Tempe Town lake without taking a single step.
The view Vernon had would have been very different.
He finished this home before Arizona had an NFL team, much less a new stadium to look out to. Sky Harbor tower wasn’t here, neither was Tempe Town Lake. Not even the 51, 101 or 202 were built; it’s hard to imagine the commute without them.
Hopefully this property will stay perched above Phoenix for many more years. Eventually it will have new owners, freshly completed renovations and very different views than what we see from the top.
For now, congratulations to the owners in completing their vision. Thank you to Vernon for his contributions to our city. And, If anyone has an interest in renting this property feel free to reach out anytime.
